This article discusses how to add a Milestone to a course.
Milestones allow you to set learning objectives in a course. A Milestone is a learning criteria that learners must meet. You can choose to leverage Milestones to encourage learners to voluntarily engage with the content in a specified manner, or to require learners to complete the criteria before they can move forward in a course.
For example, you can create a Milestone that requires learners to complete a quiz with a score of 70% of more. Learners cannot view content in the following sections of the course until they successfully complete the quiz as defined by the Milestone.
Go to Content > Courses.
Open a course. Note: You must have a video, quiz, assignment, or SCORM activity already in the course in order to add a Milestone. For video activities, the video must be uploaded to Northpass (not embedded).
Click Add Activity (the video, quiz, assignment or SCORM activity must come before the Milestone activity if you will be using the gating functionality) and name the activity (e.g., Checkpoint).
Select Milestone as the activity type.
Click on the dropdown menu next to Add a requirement, select a requirement and add the criteria. You can add as many as you'd like (with consideration to the number of quiz, video, assignment or SCORM activities that come before the Milestone). Check the box toward the bottom if you want to prevent learners from viewing activities in the remainder of the course until they complete this Milestone.
As an optional step, enter a Completed milestone message to display when learners meet the criteria of the Milestone; and an Incomplete milestone message to display when learners do not meet the criteria of the Milestone.
Quick tip: If you creating a quiz requirement Milestone, revisit the quiz activity and determine whether you want to allow learners to retake the quiz. For example, if you do not allow learners to retake the quiz and have a Milestone that requires learners to complete the quiz at 70% of more before progressing in the course, the learner will be prevented from moving forward in the course if they do not score 70% or more on their first try.
